WordNerd: Latibulation
The WordNerd finds that many creative people are shy, retiring types, so this word might suit you. Latibulation was defined in a 17th-century dictionary as ‘privily to hide oneself in a corner.' How delightful.
Latibulation has its origins in the Latin word latibulum, a hiding place for animals. You may be familiar with the word latent or hidden; it comes from the same root.
What's Going On: I Won An Award!
I went along to a swanky awards lunch at Faithlegg House Hotel in Waterford last Thursday, looking to have a bit of fun and to strut in my pink suit. Next thing you know, my name is being called as the winner of the Creative Professional Category in the Network Ireland Businesswoman of the Year Awards.
I am the branch winner and I now go on to the national finals in Kildare in September. It appears they gave me the award for my general writerly fabulousness. Nice one!
Grammar Grouch: Is He Dead or Alive
The Grammar Grouch saw a sign informing him that the well-known singer Nathan Carter would be performing "Live" at Kilmore. The quotation marks around the Live suggest to the Grammar Grouch that the author of the sign was questioning whether Nathan Carter was dead or alive.
Photo Description. A blue and yellow sign tells us that Nathan Carter is playing live in Kilmore. What’s notable about the sign is that there are quotation marks around the word “Live” which feel unnecessary.
But the sign was simply informing people they could enjoy a live performance from Nathan Carter. When the Grouch realised this, he breathed a sigh of relief; it appears the wagon wheel will roll on for a while longer.
Submission Opportunity: Oddball Magazine
Oddball Magazine is a literary magazine strongly based on the theme of art and mental health. The range of genres it accepts is breathtaking, many forms of poetry, prose, personal essay and review.
Oddball also accepts rolling submissions as it publishes daily. However, it doesn't accept simultaneous submissions and you do need to use the Submittable platform to submit. Still, it's worth a look, and you can have a look at it here.
Valuable Writing Resource: Connections Arts Centre
Connections Arts Centre is an arts centre in Dublin that's entirely devoted to people with intellectual disabilities. I was delighted to come across it recently. It's still at an embryonic stage, but it has developed a programme of classes in art, drama, yoga and makeup application.
Connections has also formed partnerships with organisations like Down Syndrome Dublin and Rehab to develop bespoke programmes for their people. It's looking to develop collaborations with artists of various disciplines, so take a look at its website to see if its offer fits with yours.
