Back to Writing School
This week’s newsletter has a definite ‘back-to-school’ vibe, showing I’m always learning and evolving as a writer.
I’ve been in ‘back-to-school’ mode in various ways this week, in my writing for myself and for others. Here’s a flavour of my week of learning.
Schools Writing Residency
I was actually in school this week – Scoil Lorcáin Boys’ National School in Waterford City, which I’ve been assigned to for the BLAST Arts Residency I take part in each year. I met the BLAST coordinator and the two teachers of fifth class about how we can create a story that will interest the boys and help them construct brilliant, imaginative stories. I’ll be starting at the school after Christmas, and lots of fun awaits.

Waterford Music Education
My role with Waterford Music continues to educate me, and at the moment I’m involved in refreshing the logo and colour scheme for the organisation. I attended a recent Zoom meeting with our talented web designer, Stephen Vaughan of Vaughanprint.
Stephen’s highly informative about how to create a logo, where to position it, and what colour schemes and fonts work best. I can manage the writing, but have a bit of catching up to do on the visuals, so being involved in this project is enhancing my skills.
SpeakEasy Writing Event
I’m sure I’ll also be greatly educated by the wisdom of acclaimed author Danielle McLaughlin on Friday 25 October, when she’s the guest of honour at our SpeakEasy Waterford Writers’ Weekend event.
I’m the MC for Danielle, so I can pick her brains, not just during the Q&A session, but when I host her for dinner beforehand. For anyone who’s interested, SpeakEasy is back in Phil Grimes Pub for this event, which is part of Waterford Writers’ Weekend.
