Newsletter: Baggy Trousers and Creative Writing
This newsletter is about baggy trousers, creative writing courses and misty doppelgangers.
WordNerd: Galligaskins
The WordNerd knows what she wants for Christmas – a pair of galligaskins. Simply so she can tell people she owns a pair. Galligaskins were wide-legged breeches or hose worn in the 16th and 17th century.
The word originates from Middle French chausses a la gregesques" or leggings in the gregesque style. The WordNerd isn't quite suer what a gregesque style is, but she's confident she can rock that style in a pair of galligaskins for Christmas.
Photo Descriptions: This is a cartoon-style drawing on a light brown background of a man wearing trousers that balloon outwards. Beside him, you see the words: Galligaskins, Very Loose Breeches.
What’s Going On: Creative Projects Coming To The Boil
As we head towards the Christmas season, some of my lovely creative workshop projects are coming to the boil. The designs for the creative writing prompts I've put together for the Irish Hospice Foundation are finally ready and I've to sign off on them this week.
And my run of intellectual disability workshops at Brothers of Charity Tramore will finish on Thursday. What a lovely run it's been. You can find out more about my community writing projects here.
Grammar Grouch: Doppelganger In Our Mist
Eagle-eyed PR guru Lesley Emerson of PR West is our guest Grammar Grouch this week. On her social media feed, she saw a poster remark about the "doppelganger in our mist." Wouldn't a doppelganger be rather hard to spot in a mist, she thought?
But then she realised that there was a D missing, and that the doppelganger was in their midst. All was right with the world again.
Writing Resource: Creative Writing for Teachers
Fighting Words in Dublin has created a course to equip primary school teachers with the tools help their young pupils be more creative with words. The programme is administered in conjunction with Dublin City University and you can find out more about it here.
Submission Opportunity: Interlude Press and Duet Books
Interlude Press and Duet Books work hand in hand with each other to produce high quality young adult fiction for an LGBTQ+ audience. They're looking for submissions for stories that cover all facets of the LGBTQ+ experience.
If you feel that the stories you're writing fit that brief, check them out.
