Newsletter: Elderly Children and Writerly Gatherings
This newsletter features a gathering of writers and a resource for non-fiction writers
WordNerd: Sitooterie
The WordNerd is mad for those lovely wooden seating areas that sprang up during the COVID nastiness; they make her feel quite continental. So, she was delighted to discover that Scottish people have a word for these attractive facilities – sitooteries.
A sitooterie is literally a place where you can sit out. The word sitooterie can also apply to seating areas you create in your home like conservatories and gazebos.
What's Going On: Meet and Greet for Writers in Tramore
I've been asked to facilitate a gathering of writers' groups in Tramore on Friday 28 July with fellow writer and newsletter subscriber Mary Howlett. The gathering will be happening in the scenic surrounds of the Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens in Tramore.
Writers' groups will have a chance to share words, ideas and inspiration, and also attend what marketing gurus call a 'soft launch' of a festival in the gardens celebrating the late Waterford poet Sean Dunne.
Photo Description: This is a poster invite for the gathering. It's a green and black poster that features a portrait of Sean Dunne, and it gives details of who will be reading at the soft launch, as well as how to book for the events on the day.
Grammar Grouch: Second Child Aged 53
The Grammar Grouch read of a celebrity who had a second child aged 53. How extraordinary, he thought, that this child could have fast-forwarded through 53 years of his life and arrived into the world already in his prime.
But a second read indicated that it was in fact the celebrity who was 53. The Grammar Grouch had once again fallen victim to clumsy phrasing.
Submission Opportunity: Cill Rialaig Residencies
You've a week to send in in your submissions for the Cill Riaaig writing residencies in Kerry offered by the Irish Writers' Centre. Submissions have to be received by 19 July and seven writers will be chosen to take part in the residency, which takes place from 26 October to 5 November.
If you're one of the lucky seven, you'll get a week to write in a house, all expenses paid. Here's the info if you're interested in applying.
Valuable Writing Resource: Association of Non-Fiction Authors
I was delighted to hear that there's an association for non-fiction writers, which has a global reach. It offers all kinds of supports to writers of many kinds of non-fiction, including memoir, self-help books and business books.
It describes itself as a community which offers writers a chance to connect and avail of good quality publishing advice. Check out the Non-Fiction Authors' Association website.
