Newsletter: Foul and Fabulous Words
This newsletter celebrates fabulous words at book launches and delights in foul words.
WordNerd: Lalochezia
The WordNerd is pure delighted to discover that there is now a word for the release of tension you feel when you swear, and it's a grand fancy word too. Lalochezia is the official word for swearing to release tension, and it has its roots in Ancient Greece.
The lalo- part comes from the Greek for speech. And believe it or not, the -chezia part comes from the Greek word khezo, meaning I defecate. So, this word is truly a foul one.
What's Going On: A Highly Satisfying Book Launch
I was privileged to attend a very special book launch a couple of weeks ago. As you may know, I did a BLAST artist in schools residency with second-year arts students at Waterpark Secondary School in Waterford. After I finished, the students and teachers worked hard to produce a book of their writings, Stories from the Past.
The launch of their book was a warm and wonderful event, full of encouraging words and a celebratory atmosphere. If you want to find out more about the writing work I do in community settings like this, click on my Solutions for Community Groups webpage.
Photo Description: Here's a picture of the authors of the bok, Stories from the Past, with their names printed underneath. They're sitting on the steps of their school.
Grammar Grouch: Sequenced Jumpsuits
The Grammar Grouch heard a review of a concert performance on the radio. According to the broadcaster, the performer was wearing a sequenced jumpsuit. Did this mean that all the colours of the jumpsuit were in sequence, or that the performer was wearing a sequence of jumpsuits, one after the other? No.
The performer was in fact wearing a sequinned jumpsuit. The Grammar Grouch is not sure which is more horrifying, the broadcaster's error or the sequinned jumpsuit itself.
Guide To Publishers Who Don't Need An Agent
Authors Publish is a resource that provides submission opportunities and workshops for authors, and each year it produces free guides to publishers who don't need an agent. It's American based, but it's still a valuable resource, as it tells you how reputable a publisher is. Click on the link to see the guide.
Valuable Writing Resource: Margaret Galvin Book Launch
I want to give a shout-out to Margaret Galvin, who faithfully responds to all my newsletter posts and who is a fine poet and workshop facilitator. She's bringing out a book of poetry and prose, Our House, Delirious, based on her life growing up in Cahir, Co. Tipperary.
There'll be a Cahir launch for the book in Cahir House Hotel on Wednesday 28 June at 7.30. If you come along, there'll be storytelling, music and refreshments. All are welcome.
