Newsletter: Loads of Literary Journal Info
This week's newsletter includes an exciting submission opportunity, and exciting submissions of my own.
WordNerd: Bosthoon
The WordNerd laments the slow death of glorious Hiberno-English words like bosthoon, used to describe a boorish person, someone who is insensitive and ill-mannered.
It comes from the Old Irish bastún, and that word in turn is taken from an Old French word with seamier origins. The richness of language never ceases to delight.
What's Going On: Submitted Piece to Journals
I went pure mad submitting a piece of flash fiction to three Irish literary journals which have short submission windows. The window for The Waxed Lemon has just opened (see below).
But I also submitted to The Four Faced Liar, whose submission window has now closed, and Howl, which is taking submissions until 8 May. Worth noting that all three journals are free to submit to.
Grammar Grouch: Being Exceedingly Clad
Rven the Bible is not immune from typos. The Grammar Grouch was shocked to learn that in a 1964 edition of the Bible, printed in New York, believers were encouraged to "Rejoice and be exceedingly clad! (Matthew 5.12)
Being clothed is the very least the Grammar Grouch would expect. But in fact, he suspects that the believers were encouraged to rejoice and be glad, which the Grouch finds quite difficult to do.
Submission Opportunity: The Waxed Lemon
Big shout out to my buds at The Waxed Lemon, who have just opened their submissions window for Issue 6 of their literary journal. It's a quality production, full of raw, punchy poems, flash fiction, stories and artwork.
The Irish language also makes its presence felt. Wonder if saying all these nice things about it will help me get in? Only time will tell.
Photo Description: This is a pic full of lemons, which I love, and the dates of the submission window, 1-12 May, in black on a yellow background.
Valuable Writing Resource: Activelink
Activelink is a weekly jobs list for the non-profit sector. It may be useful for writers and creative types because it offers you an opportunity to submit tenders for delivering workshops, including creative ones.
You can also apply for jobs and volunteer work, and some of the opportunities may tie in with your field of work. Here's the website if you want to find out more.
