Weekly Writerly Roundup: Magazine Submissions and Fun Marketing
A Wexford magazine taking submissions and a book marketer who makes marketing fun.
Wexford Bohemian Taking Submissions
The Wexford Bohemian is a journal based in the highly bohemian Wexford Town and is published by Red Books. It’s taking submissions for its sixth issue at the moment, for poetry, essays, reviews and short stories, and submissions close on 30 June.
It’s very inclusive in its submissions policy. You can submit for free and you can submit by email to wexfordbohemian@gmail.com. Thanks to Margaret Galvin, passionate adopted Wexfordian, for the info. You can also find out more about The Wexford Bohemian on their Facebook page.
A Gathering of Writers In A Garden
Last year there was a mighty gathering of writers in the Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens in Tramore, as part of a day to celebrate the late Waterford poet Sean Dunne. Now there’s going to be an even bigger and better gathering of writers, as part of a Sean Dunne writing weekend.
My co-MC Mary Howlett and I will be tormenting all the writers we know about The Gathering, but for now I can tell you it’ll be on Saturday 29 June and it’ll be two hours long. If you want to be tormented about it too, contact me on derbhile@writewords.ie.
Photo Description: This is a pic taken at last year’s gathering in the Japanese gardens. I’m on the right and my co-MC Mary Howlett is on the left. We’re both wearing pink shirts. Margaret O’Brien, author of Weather Report, is in the centre. She’s wearing a mustard-coloured cardigan and reading from a piece of paper.
Dan Blank, Book Marketer
I heard the book marketer Dan Blank talk on the Creative Penn podcast talk in a refreshing way about book marketing. He’s on a mission to take the groan factor out of marketing.
He calls it human-centred marketing, which sounds a bit buzzword-y, but I did like the message beyond it – that marketing is about connecting with people. If you think of marketing as simply talking to your readers, you may even find marketing fun.
He’s also got great advice about Substack newsletters, which I’m planning to explore. Here’s his website if you want to take a look, We Grow Media.
And finally… I’m going to be doing some literary hobnobbing this week, as I’m attending a reading by the poet and novelist Elaine Feeney at Ardkeen Library in Waterford City.
If you want to go, it’s at 3pm on Saturday and you ring Ardkeen Library on 051849755 to book your place. Big shout out to the brilliant staff of Waterford Libraries for continuing to bring top literary talent to eager readers.
Very interesting about the Wexford mag, Derbhile, thanks for the heads up! And yes, the libraries are doing great work in communities. I attended an excellent workshop with Eilis Ni Dhuibhne in my local library on Friday morning.
